Woodfin Town Council Discusses Expansion Budget, Prioritizes Public Safety and Employee Compensation
On May 5, 2026, the Woodfin Town Council convened a special work session focused on finalizing recommendations for the upcoming fiscal year’s (2027) expansion budget – funds allocated beyond standard operating costs. This session, a continuation of previous discussions, aimed to prepare for the formal budget adoption process and provided valuable insight into the council's priorities. The meeting was attended by all Town Council members, key town staff including Town Manager Sherry Powers and Police Chief Jackie, and was conducted without any formal public comment.
A significant portion of the discussion centered on employee compensation and benefits, with council members exploring a proposed pay classification plan. This includes adjustments for the Detective 2 position, reclassifying the Finance Department’s Senior Administrative Specialist/Project Manager role, and upgrading Sergeant positions. The council also considered the town's longevity bonus program, designed to reward long-term employee dedication. Recognizing the rising costs of health insurance, the council acknowledged a trend toward employees opting for premium plans and discussed strategies to ensure affordable coverage options remain available.
Public safety was another key focus, with Police Chief Jackie presenting the department’s goals and budget requests. The council engaged in detailed conversations about several initiatives, including a regional data sharing project with neighboring municipalities to improve information analysis and response times. Other notable requests included plans for modernizing uniforms, equipment, and firearms; a proposal to reinstate a canine unit for drug detection, community engagement, and evidence searching; and the acquisition of a drone program to support search and rescue operations, crime scene investigations, and other critical situations. Council members emphasized the importance of data-driven decision-making and community engagement as cornerstones of the Police Department's strategy.
While no formal votes were taken during this work session, several key decisions and directions emerged. The council approved the meeting agenda as presented and decided to postpone a tentatively scheduled June 2nd meeting, indicating that budget discussions were largely complete. The Town Manager highlighted the town’s strong financial position, thanks to recent FEMA reimbursements related to prior debris removal efforts.
Looking ahead, the council will closely monitor county tax numbers and potentially reconvene if those figures change significantly. Town staff will continue to refine budget proposals based on the council's feedback, and efforts will continue to pursue grant opportunities for initiatives like the proposed drone program. Ultimately, this work session demonstrated a commitment from the Woodfin Town Council to address key priorities for the town – ensuring competitive employee compensation, bolstering public safety through strategic investments in law enforcement technology and personnel, and maintaining fiscal responsibility. Residents can expect further updates as the formal budget adoption process progresses.
