Preview: Upcoming Historic Resources Commission Meeting (July 8, 2026)

The upcoming meeting of the Historic Resources Commission on July 8th will focus primarily on two significant projects impacting Asheville’s historic areas: the rehabilitation of the Cathedral of All Souls and a new burial area at Riverside Cemetery. Additionally, there will be discussion regarding potential amendments to fence standards in the Montford Historic District.

What Will Be Discussed & Potential Decisions:

  • Cathedral of All Souls Rehabilitation: Commissioners will review detailed plans for restoring the Cathedral following flood damage, including accessibility improvements (a new ramp and accessible restrooms), flood mitigation strategies (deployable walls and equipment relocation), and preservation of historic features. A key decision will be whether to approve these revised plans, allowing the restoration work to proceed.
  • Riverside Cemetery Burial Area: The Commission will consider a plan for developing a new burial area within Riverside Cemetery. This includes landscaping, pathways, and infrastructure improvements. Approval of this plan would authorize the construction of the new burial area.
  • Montford Fence Standards: A discussion will take place regarding potential changes to the fence standards in Montford. Commissioners may vote on whether to adopt these amendments, impacting future fence construction within the district.
