Parks & Recreation Advisory Board Meeting Recap: May 12, 2026
The Parks & Recreation Advisory Board convened on May 12, 2026, to discuss ongoing projects, upcoming events, and the development of a crucial Master Plan for our county’s parks, greenways, and open spaces. The meeting provided updates on several key initiatives impacting recreational opportunities for residents across the county, with a particular focus on greenway expansion and recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene.
A primary focus of the meeting was the ongoing development of the Parks & Recreation, Greenways and Trails, and Open Space Master Plan. Board members received a detailed overview of the phased development process, which prioritizes community input. Currently, efforts are centered on incorporating new developments like Deaverview Mountain and addressing properties affected by the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) resulting from Hurricane Helene. A significant decision will be made in June when the board presents two contrasting design options – one emphasizing lake/pond features and another prioritizing wetland habitat – to the community for feedback. This plan will shape recreational spaces across our county for years to come, so resident participation in the upcoming June feedback sessions is encouraged.
Beyond planning, the board highlighted several exciting initiatives already underway. The upcoming Spring Games for Special Olympics on May 21st at AC Reynolds High School promises to be a large-scale event, building on year-round programs like bowling and swimming. Residents can also look forward to a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Bumkin Sports Park on June 12th. Discussions also centered around the recently acquired pickleball nets and introductory sessions, expanding recreational opportunities for all ages. A community engagement event is planned at Owen Park in the coming months, and details will be shared soon.
Community members had an opportunity to share their thoughts during the public comment period, expressing enthusiasm for recent greenway presentations and progress. Concerns were raised regarding pedestrian access at Riverside Park, particularly with the anticipated increase in river users. Board members acknowledged these concerns and committed to addressing potential bottlenecks as greenway projects move forward.
Several action items emerged from the meeting, ensuring continued progress on key initiatives. Staff will follow up with Emily Tracy regarding support at the Swannanoa Market, a vital community hub. The board will actively review drafts of the Master Plan in the coming months, providing valuable feedback to shape its final form. Ongoing efforts will continue regarding Greenway easement acquisition, with planned meetings scheduled with Silver Line Plastics & Duke Energy. Finally, the board announced an open position for District 2 (North Funcombe) and will share application information to encourage resident participation in shaping our parks system.
As emphasized by Parks & Rec Chair Kevin Converco, securing funding for park projects is paramount, particularly with an upcoming ballot measure regarding county revenue. The Board’s work directly impacts the quality of life for all residents, ensuring access to recreational opportunities and well-maintained green spaces. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the Master Plan development process, upcoming events, and opportunities for community input. The next meeting is scheduled for July 14th.
