Board of Elections Meeting Recap – July 14, 2026

The Buncombe County Board of Elections convened a meeting on July 14, 2026 (originally scheduled for July 17th), addressing key issues related to voter registration, election procedures, and ongoing audits. While Board members Sally and Jake were absent, the meeting proceeded with a full agenda focused on ensuring fair and accessible elections for all residents. This recap provides an overview of the discussions, decisions, and next steps taken during this important meeting.

A significant portion of the meeting centered on clarifying the Board’s authority regarding Sunday voting. While the current early voting plan, which includes Sundays, has already been approved by the State Board of Elections, members sought to understand that weekend voting (including Sundays) is an optional choice for the Board. Discussion highlighted the typically lower turnout on Sundays compared to other days, but Board member Jake passionately advocated for maintaining Sunday voting hours, emphasizing its crucial role as an accessible option for many community members. This discussion ensures the Board is well-informed for future considerations regarding weekend voting options.

Beyond Sunday voting, the Board addressed a substantial number of voter challenges related to deceased voters. Following established procedures, they held a preliminary hearing for 41 such challenges and divided into smaller groups to review the filings. The Board also engaged in a discussion stemming from a recent audit conducted by the State Auditor’s office, focusing on the maintenance of voter rolls and identifying potential improvements to the Board's processes. The audit team observed the Board’s procedures firsthand, and a formal report is anticipated soon, which will likely inform future process adjustments.

The Board also approved a contingency plan to address potential disruptions at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, a current voting location undergoing ownership changes. Should the need arise, AC Reynolds High School has been designated as a backup location to ensure uninterrupted voting access for residents. Finally, the Board approved scheduling an evidentiary hearing for August 25th to further investigate the 41 voter challenges, demonstrating a commitment to maintaining accurate and up-to-date voter rolls.

Looking ahead, the Board anticipates receiving a comprehensive report from the State Auditor’s office detailing their findings and recommendations regarding voter roll maintenance. Staff will continue to investigate the 41 voter challenges, paying particular attention to those with minor discrepancies. All Board members are also expected to attend the State Board of Elections Conference from August 9th-11th, with Gabrielle handling logistical inquiries. The next public meeting is scheduled for August 25th, where the evidentiary hearings regarding voter challenges will continue. The Board encourages citizens to stay informed about election deadlines and processes by visiting the Board’s website, and welcomes public input on voting procedures.
