Recap of Affordable Housing Advisory Committee Special Meeting (December 4, 2025)
The Affordable Housing Advisory Committee (AHAC) convened a special meeting on December 4, 2025, in a hybrid format from the First Floor Conference Room. The meeting was led by Chair Andy Barnett and included Vice Mayor Antanette Mosley as the City Council Liaison. The primary focus of this meeting was a detailed discussion regarding a potential Home Repair Program, aimed at addressing the need for such an initiative within the city and exploring its feasibility. The meeting also included administrative matters, a review of the committee’s role, and an opportunity for public comment.
The meeting began with administrative items, including the adoption of new Rules of Procedure and officer elections. Following this, a discussion was held to provide context for the committee’s ongoing work and clarify its role within the broader city landscape. The bulk of the meeting was then dedicated to exploring a potential Home Repair Program, encompassing discussions on identifying need, outlining program goals, examining existing resources, and reviewing past home repair efforts within Asheville. Committee members were actively solicited for their input on the program’s design and potential implementation strategies. A public comment period was provided, allowing citizens to share their perspectives on affordable housing initiatives.
Prior to this special meeting, the AHAC held a regular meeting on September 25, 2025. During that meeting, the committee unanimously approved minutes from a previous August 1, 2024 meeting. They also made two unanimous appointments to the newly formed Recovery Boards: Scott Adams was appointed to the Economy Recovery Board, and Andy Barnett was selected for the Housing Recovery Board. A presentation by Nikki Reid detailed the new Recovery Board structure and its implications for existing advisory boards like AHAC. While no public comment was received during that meeting, an email arrived after adjournment.
Currently, the AHAC has two vacancies, with applications accepted until January 25, 2025. Interested individuals can find more information about the AHAC and its work on the city's website: https://www.ashevillenc.gov/AHAC. The committee will continue to evaluate the feasibility of a Home Repair Program and consider its role within the broader recovery efforts, as outlined by the newly established Recovery Boards.
