French Broad River MPO Board Meeting Recap: January 16, 2025

On January 16th, 2025, the French Broad River Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Governing Board convened to discuss and approve key transportation planning initiatives for our region. This meeting, attended by board members representing various local governments and agencies, focused on laying the groundwork for future transportation projects and ensuring equitable access to services.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to advancing "Elevate 2050," the MPO’s long-range vision for transportation over the next 25 years. Following review and discussion, the Board gave preliminary approval to a draft vision statement emphasizing resilience, equity, connectivity, and sustainability. This plan will guide transportation investments and prioritize projects that align with these core values, ultimately shaping how we move around the region for decades to come. The Board also approved the Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP) for Fiscal Year 2026, outlining the MPO’s budget and planned activities. This includes a focus on data management to support future planning efforts, as well as a call for project proposals that will help determine how the MPO allocates resources.

The Board also approved a timeline for seeking projects related to transportation services for seniors and people with disabilities through the 5310 and JARC funding programs. Applications will be accepted until February 20th, with recommendations coming to the Board in March – a vital opportunity for local organizations providing essential transportation services. Finally, an update was provided on ongoing recovery efforts following Hurricane Helena, particularly concerning the I-40 corridor and the Chimney Rock area. Discussions are ongoing regarding potential wildlife migration routes as rebuilding efforts progress, demonstrating a commitment to balancing infrastructure restoration with environmental considerations.

While the meeting was largely focused on approvals, it's important to note that no public comments were received during the meeting. The Board acknowledged receiving some social media feedback regarding the MTP, which will be considered as planning progresses.

What's Next? The Board’s decisions set the stage for several key actions. Amendments to the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) will be further reviewed in February, and a call for planning projects will be issued later this year. The MPO’s Transportation Technical Committee (TCC) and Board will adopt safety performance targets at their February meetings. Residents interested in learning more about these initiatives are encouraged to visit the MPO website or contact their local representatives for updates. This meeting underscored the MPO’s ongoing commitment to planning a future where transportation is safe, equitable, and sustainable for all residents of the French Broad River region.
