French Broad River MPO Governing Board Meeting Recap: May 15, 2025
On May 15th, the French Broad River Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Governing Board convened to discuss regional transportation planning and make key decisions impacting Asheville and surrounding communities. This recap breaks down the meeting’s main points, so you can understand what was discussed and how it might affect you.
Decisions & Directions for Regional Roads: A significant portion of the meeting focused on ongoing road projects and future planning. The Board unanimously approved a consent agenda, which included adjustments to the MPO’s budget and support for Hendersonville's efforts to update their bicycle plan. However, two key decisions were tabled (postponed) for further discussion: a proposal to add a median to the NC 191 widening project (part of the I-26 Connector) and a plan to dissolve the Citizen Advisory Committee. The NC 191 median discussion highlighted a desire to improve safety, while the CAC review stemmed from concerns about low participation and a need for more effective citizen engagement. The Board will revisit these topics, seeking feedback from Mills River and exploring alternative ways to involve residents in transportation planning.
Community Voices Heard: The meeting opened with public comment, where Asheville resident Sonia Marcus passionately voiced concerns about the I-26 Connector project. She emphasized the potential negative impact on pedestrian and bike access, as well as neighborhood character, urging the Board and NCDOT to consider community input. Marcus highlighted an upcoming design charrette (May 17-19) where residents can share their concerns, encouraging community members to attend and make their voices heard.
Looking Ahead: Elevate 2050 & Beyond: A major focus was on "Elevate 2050," the MPO’s long-range transportation plan. Board members reviewed draft project lists and discussed strategies for gathering public input, which will be collected through an online survey (drivebeyond.org) and a series of public meetings in July (July 7-9). The plan aims to guide transportation decisions for the next 25 years, so your participation is crucial in shaping our region's future. Updates were also provided on other initiatives, including the "Safe Routes to School" program and the “Strive Not to Drive” campaign encouraging alternative transportation.
What’s Next & Why It Matters: Following the meeting, several key action items will be pursued. The NCDOT is expected to reconsider adding a median on NC 191, coordinating with Mills River. The MPO staff will explore alternative citizen engagement strategies to replace the Citizen Advisory Committee, aiming for a more impactful and inclusive process. Most importantly, residents are encouraged to participate in the Elevate 2050 public meetings (July 7-9) and provide feedback through the online survey. These decisions will directly impact our region's roads, safety, and overall quality of life.
