On January 6, 2026, the Buncombe County Board of Elections convened to discuss preparations for the upcoming primary election and address a challenge to a candidate’s eligibility. Training for election staff is underway, with a focus on early voting and then election day procedures at various locations including 200 College and 40 Cox Avenue. The Board also confirmed the onboarding of 22 contract staff members to assist with election duties, and absentee ballots are scheduled to be mailed out on January 12th.
A notable item of discussion involved a challenge filed against Vic Mormon, a candidate for Sheriff. The Board scheduled a hearing to address this challenge on Tuesday, January 20th at 2:30 PM. They emphasized the importance of following proper procedures and providing adequate notice for this hearing. In a move to bolster voter access, the Board tentatively approved allocating $67,280 in the budget for two additional early voting sites, pending identification of suitable locations and staffing. They also approved hiring a new Outreach Coordinator who will begin on January 14th, further expanding the Board's ability to connect with and inform voters.
During public comments, a discussion arose regarding recent changes implemented by the U.S. Postal Service and their potential impact on absentee voting, particularly regarding mail cancellation policies. Board members stressed the need to carefully monitor these changes and adapt accordingly. A key point of emphasis throughout the meeting was ensuring sufficient capacity at early voting locations, with a focus on finding sites that offer ample parking and accessibility.
