Board of Elections Meeting Recap: October 7, 2025

The Buncombe County Board of Elections convened on October 7, 2025, to discuss preparations for the upcoming municipal elections (November 4th) and review current operational processes. The meeting, attended by all Board members, focused heavily on ensuring a smooth and accessible voting experience for residents of Weaverville, Woodfin, and the Woodfin Water and Sewer District. The Board also welcomed Gabrielle Corey as their new receptionist and clerk, adding a valuable asset to the team.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to outlining key dates and procedures for the upcoming elections. Absentee ballots have already been mailed, with October 10th at 5:00 PM marking the deadline to register. Early voting will commence on October 16th, held initially at a warehouse location (50 Cox Avenue) and later with an additional site in Weaverville the week before election day. Residents are reminded to bring photo ID and proof of residence for same-day registration, and encouraged to utilize online resources like the Board's website or the State Court’s website to confirm registration and polling locations.

The Board addressed community feedback gathered from a recent public survey regarding the proposed early voting plan, which received overwhelmingly positive support (approximately 84% approval). While residents largely approved of the plan, suggestions were made for consistency in voting hours and locations, as well as exploring options to serve the North Asheville community. Discussions centered on potential sites in North Asheville, including UNCA and the local library, as well as considering the Jupiter fire station. A citizen also voiced concerns about clarity in voter registration processes, prompting a discussion on how to better communicate these procedures.

Several key decisions were made during the meeting. The Board unanimously approved both the agenda and minutes from the previous meeting, demonstrating a commitment to transparent governance. All 25 voter challenges based on death records were reviewed and sustained, ensuring accurate voter rolls. Recognizing the need for long-term planning, the Board agreed to develop a comprehensive plan for election facilities, identifying potential risks and improvements. Finally, they committed to coordinating with the County Attorney to communicate their facility needs and concerns to county management.

Looking ahead, the Board will continue gathering information and exploring options for improved election facilities to address community concerns. Staff training for early voting and election day personnel is scheduled to begin next week, and the search for an absentee position continues with second-round interviews planned. Residents can stay informed by visiting the Board of Elections website (link not provided) or contacting them directly via phone or email. The Board’s focus remains on providing accessible and secure voting opportunities for all Buncombe County citizens, working collaboratively with the county and community stakeholders to address any challenges that arise.
