Buncombe County Library Advisory Board Meeting Recap: September 25, 2025

The Buncombe County Library Advisory Board convened on September 25, 2025, for a meeting focused on ongoing initiatives, strategic planning, and recognizing the library system's vital role in the community. While initially starting as an informal update due to a quorum issue, the board officially convened and addressed several key topics impacting library services across Buncombe County.

A significant portion of the meeting centered around recognizing the dedication and resilience of library staff following Hurricane Helene. The Library Director expressed profound gratitude for their efforts, highlighting their flexibility and commitment to supporting the community during recovery. This underscored the library's importance as a safe, welcoming space, particularly in times of need. The board also formally elected David as Chair and Leanne as Vice-Chair, solidifying leadership for the coming year. Minutes from previous meetings were approved without discussion.

Beyond recognition, discussions revolved around several key projects and initiatives. The Board celebrated the successful completion of the years-long Fairview Library Oral History Project, a collaborative effort between library staff, volunteers, and Friends of the Fairview Library. The collection is now publicly accessible online and in hardback format at both Fairview Library and Special Collections, with the meeting room officially renamed to honor Annie Clark Ager. Planning is also underway for the 2026 "One Book, One Buncombe" program, a beloved community event. A new partnership with NC Works was officially launched, aligning with the county's strategic plan to support job seekers and small businesses. Finally, renovations are planned for the West Asheville Library, requiring a temporary closure – details on the timeline will be shared as they become available.

The meeting also included important staffing updates, with Erin Parcells promoted to Library Services Manager and a new branch manager for West Asheville joining the team in October. Two brief stories were shared illustrating the positive impact of library services, including a patron securing employment with assistance from East Asheville Library staff.

Looking ahead, the Board has several action items to address. They will continue participating in the fiscal year 2027 budget planning process, ensuring adequate resources for library operations and future growth. Residents are encouraged to review the "Envision Buncombe" plan, providing feedback by early October. Finally, Kay Wall from the Trust Fund will be contacted to explore options for an end-of-year gathering, bringing together library board members, trustees, volunteers, and staff to celebrate achievements and foster collaboration.

This meeting demonstrated the Buncombe County Library system's ongoing commitment to providing essential services, supporting community initiatives, and adapting to evolving needs. Residents can expect continued progress on these projects and a renewed focus on ensuring the library remains a valuable resource for all.
