I-26 Aesthetics Committee Meeting Recap: Shaping Asheville’s Gateway

On June 18, 2025, the I-26 Aesthetics Committee convened to continue discussions on enhancing the visual appeal of the I-26 corridor project, specifically focusing on the stretch between Ballin Bridge and Jet-Bowen Bridge. This meeting provided valuable insights into ongoing efforts to create a more welcoming and aesthetically pleasing entrance to Asheville for residents and visitors alike. The meeting included participation from committee members, representatives from the City of Asheville's Transportation and Public Department, North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) officials, and concerned community members.

A primary focus of the meeting was addressing concerns surrounding the aesthetics west of the Bowen Bridge, an area currently lacking some of the streetscape enhancements seen further east. Committee members strongly emphasized that this area will serve as a key entry point into Asheville, making its visual appeal critically important. Discussions explored potential improvements to the bridge structure itself, including exploring decorative metal panel options (known as scrims). While these ideas were met with enthusiasm, concerns were raised about the associated costs and potential copyright challenges. The committee also reviewed various form liner options for the bridge walls, considering aesthetics, durability and cost-effectiveness. Finally, potential lighting strategies for the underbridge area were examined to further enhance the corridor’s appearance.

Community input played a significant role in the discussion, with residents raising concerns about bus stop placement and its potential impact on multi-use paths. Suggestions were made to consider bus stop locations early in the design process, ensuring coordination with Asheville Transit and NCDOT. Another resident highlighted the need to improve the visual experience for drivers approaching Asheville from the west, emphasizing the bridge's prominent visibility. These comments underscored the community’s desire for a welcoming and visually appealing gateway into the city.

The committee approved the consent agenda, which included the minutes from the previous meeting and today’s agenda. While no formal votes were taken on major design decisions, a clear consensus emerged regarding the importance of prioritizing visual appeal and aligning with Asheville's overall aesthetic goals. Several key action items were identified as a result of the meeting: NCDOT and Asheville Transit will coordinate on bus stop placement; city staff will investigate the feasibility of incorporating a scrim design and address copyright implications; and staff will provide detailed information on public art installation timelines. Mark Bayer is tasked with distributing a PDF showcasing potential form liner options for committee review.

Ultimately, the I-26 Aesthetics Committee meeting demonstrated a strong commitment to improving Asheville’s visual identity along this crucial corridor. While challenges remain regarding funding, coordination, and timelines, the committee’s dedication to creating a visually appealing gateway into Asheville is evident. Residents can expect further updates as these initiatives progress, shaping the future appearance of a key arrival point into our city.
