Bobbitt County Library Advisory Board Meeting Recap – July 10, 2025

On July 10th, the Bobbitt County Library Advisory Board held an introductory meeting to welcome new members and receive updates on library operations. While a formal agenda wasn't in place, the session proved valuable for understanding the current state of the library system and outlining key priorities moving forward. This meeting provided a glimpse into exciting developments aimed at enhancing library services for all residents of Bobbitt County.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to introductions, welcoming new board members David Goble (representing the Trust Fund for Buncombe County Libraries Board) and Samantha Randolph (from Goodwill’s workforce development program). Both new members expressed enthusiasm for supporting the library and highlighted their unique perspectives – Goble drawing on his extensive library experience, and Randolph emphasizing the importance of accessible spaces for community engagement. The board also discussed the vacant seat representing District 2 (covering Leicester, Candler, Barnardsville, and Weaverville), with applications currently being accepted through the county portal.

Library Director Jason Hyatt delivered a comprehensive update on library activities, sharing encouraging news about the system's recovery and growth. Notably, programming and materials budgets have been restored to pre-pandemic levels, signaling a renewed commitment to enriching library offerings. The end of the county hiring freeze is allowing the library to actively recruit for crucial positions, including Library Substitutes, a part-time cataloger, and a full-time Youth Services Librarian. Hyatt also highlighted exciting partnerships forming with NC Works (to support job seekers) and Legal Aid of North Carolina (for legal education programs), expanding the library’s role as a community resource. A particularly noteworthy achievement was the recognition of the Reading Mentors Program at the Inca-Candler Library, which received awards from both the North Carolina Public Library Directors Association and the National Association of Counties. A new initiative to recognize staff "stories of impact" is also being piloted, showcasing the positive influence the library has on the community.

While no formal votes were taken during this introductory meeting, discussions centered around filling the District 2 vacancy and supporting library staff. There was a clear consensus among board members regarding the value of the library’s services and a desire to champion its ongoing efforts. No formal public comment period was held, but board members shared their enthusiasm and support for the library's initiatives.

Looking ahead, several key action items were identified: Library staff will work to reschedule a full board meeting with as many members as possible. The process of filling the District 2 vacancy will continue through the county portal, ensuring representation for that area. Efforts are underway to schedule and promote NC Works drop-in sessions on the library calendar, further expanding access to job seeker support. Finally, the Advisory Board will explore ways to formally recognize and celebrate library staff achievements – a testament to their dedication and the positive impact they have on Bobbitt County.

This meeting underscored the Bobbitt County Public Library’s commitment to providing valuable resources and services to residents. The focus on restoring budgets, expanding partnerships, and recognizing staff highlights a dedication to meeting the evolving needs of the community. Residents can expect to see continued growth and innovation in library programs and services as these initiatives move forward.
