Buncombe County Board of Commissioners Meeting Recap - March 18, 2025
On March 18, 2025, the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners convened for their regular meeting, addressing a range of critical issues impacting residents. The meeting began with standard procedural items, including the Pledge of Allegiance and approval of the consent agenda. A notable technical delay occurred at the start, briefly interrupting the introductory video. Commissioners were reminded of their ethical obligations throughout the proceedings.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to public comment, providing residents a platform to voice concerns and present proposals. Several key issues were raised: Dr. Layla Lewis from Liberty and Health Alliance proposed hosting a free mega clinic in Asheville, offering vital medical services alongside Hurricane Helene recovery assistance; Reverend Sarah Wilcox urged the board to prioritize public education amidst budget concerns and potential state policy changes; and Susan Schemer highlighted the ongoing needs of older adults impacted by Hurricane Helene. Other speakers included Anna Marcel de Hermanitas, advocating for a proclamation supporting the safety and dignity of all community members; Casey Gilbert from the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce, requesting continued support for small businesses recovering from the hurricane; and Jerry Goldberg from the Red Cross, accepting recognition for their volunteer efforts.
The Board took several important decisions during the "New Business & Decisions" segment. They approved a resolution establishing the America 2050 North Carolina Committee, demonstrating their commitment to commemorating the United States' 250th anniversary. A key development was authorization for the County Manager to negotiate a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Harmony Housing, paving the way for a 206-unit affordable housing project on Cox Avenue – a significant step towards addressing the county’s housing needs. The board also approved comments on the state's draft CDBG-DR action plan, advocating for adjustments to housing funding and inclusion of planning activities in economic revitalization efforts. Finally, a budget amendment was approved to allocate state relief funding for disaster food and nutrition programs and essential services for those affected by Hurricane Helene.
Looking ahead, the Board will continue to focus on several key areas. They agreed upon a process for interviewing applicants for the Planning Board and Historic Resources Commission, with interviews scheduled for April 8th. Discussions are underway regarding advertising positions on the Affordable Housing Committee, further demonstrating their dedication to addressing housing challenges. Residents should also note that an all-day Board retreat is scheduled for March 20th, and the next regular meeting will be held on April 1st. Overall, this meeting underscored the Board's commitment to addressing immediate recovery needs from Hurricane Helene, prioritizing affordable housing solutions, and actively engaging with the community on important issues.
