Asheville Transit Committee Meeting Recap: November 19, 2019

On November 19th, the Asheville Transit Committee convened to discuss ongoing improvements and upcoming changes to the city’s transit system. This committee, comprised of citizen volunteers advising Asheville City Council, plays a vital role in shaping the future of public transportation within our community. The meeting included opportunities for citizen input and focused on several key areas impacting transit services, from marketing plans to long-term planning.

A significant portion of the meeting centered around a proposed marketing plan designed to communicate upcoming changes to transit routes and service names. Committee members engaged in robust discussion, emphasizing the need for clear, accessible communication that reaches all residents. Concerns were raised regarding initial marketing materials, with a call for more detail and clarity in conveying the changes. The committee stressed the importance of proactive outreach, including engaging with community leaders and utilizing ambassadors to ensure residents are well-informed. Staff was tasked with exploring options to improve communication, expanding outreach efforts and providing more detailed information.

Beyond immediate marketing efforts, the committee also addressed leadership transitions within the committee itself. Daniel stepped down as Vice Chair, and Thomas Walker was approved to fill that role, pending formal approval from the City Council. The committee took a moment to formally recognize Saifra for her two and a half years of dedicated service as chair, drafting a letter of appreciation that committee members were invited to sign.

The committee also discussed vacancies on the Transit Committee, receiving applications from potential new members. Due to a limited response and a desire for broader community representation, the committee decided to postpone appointments and revisit applications at their next meeting. They will also explore ways to improve the application process to ensure a more diverse and inclusive group of advisors.

Finally, discussions touched upon the city's overall budget and its impact on transit services. A presentation from the City’s budget division outlined funding sources, major expenses, and the overall budgeting process. The committee also considered a request to fund a feasibility study for a new transit facility, which would support future growth and improved service delivery.
