Woodfin Town Board of Commissioners Meeting Recap – March 16, 2021

On March 16th, the Woodfin Town Board of Commissioners convened for a meeting focused on several key issues impacting the community. The meeting saw extensive discussion surrounding a proposed large-scale development, ongoing efforts to secure funding for community improvements, and the establishment of new advisory committees. A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to addressing resident concerns, demonstrating a commitment to open communication and responsiveness.

A central point of discussion was the proposed "The Bluffs at Riverbend" development, prompting a wave of public comment expressing concerns about its potential impact. Residents voiced worries regarding increased traffic congestion on Richmond Hill Drive, the development's effect on Woodfin’s unique character and ambiance, potential negative impacts on water quality and stormwater management, and even raised questions about the ethics surrounding the rezoning process. Several speakers emphasized the critical need for a bridge to be constructed before any construction begins, citing safety concerns and potential strain on existing infrastructure. The Board ultimately continued the hearing for the conditional use permit until April 5th, allowing for further consideration of these concerns.

Beyond the development debate, the Board received an update on the American Rescue Plan (ARP) funds Woodfin is slated to receive – a total of $1.9 million with the first portion becoming available in June. Discussions centered on identifying eligible uses for these funds, including public assistance, economic relief, and infrastructure investments. The Board acknowledged the need to develop a comprehensive long-term plan for utilizing these funds effectively, ensuring they best serve the needs of Woodfin residents. Additionally, the Board formally designated the Town Administrator as the Finance Officer to align with state requirements and approved the appointment of six members to the newly formed Parks and Greenway Advisory Committee. This committee will play a vital role in overseeing the Woodfin Greenway and Blueway project, providing valuable guidance for its development.

The meeting also included updates from the Police Department and Public Works, highlighting ongoing projects like the Riverside Park construction (expected completion this summer) and grant applications related to the Greenway/Blueway project. The Police Chief reported increased activity and cited a recent shooting incident, prompting heightened patrols in affected areas. Residents were assured of the department’s commitment to safety and ongoing efforts to address community concerns.

Looking ahead, several key action items were identified. The Board will continue researching eligible uses for the ARP funds and developing a long-term plan, while the newly appointed Parks & Greenway Advisory Committee will schedule its inaugural meeting soon. The conditional use permit hearing for "The Bluffs" remains on the agenda for April 5th. Residents are encouraged to stay informed by visiting the Town of Woodfin website (https://www.woodfinnc.org/) and attending future Board meetings. The discussions surrounding the development, funding opportunities, and committee appointments demonstrate a focus on shaping Woodfin’s future while addressing the concerns of its residents.
