Recap of the December Commission Meeting: Burke County Board of Commissioners
On December 16, 2024, the Burke County Board of Commissioners convened for their monthly meeting, addressing a range of topics from ongoing hurricane recovery to recognizing local achievements and making key appointments. The meeting, attended by the full Board, focused on providing updates to residents and taking action on several critical issues impacting Burke County.
A significant portion of the meeting centered around the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. County Manager Brian McNealy presented a detailed overview of recovery efforts, noting that over 101,000 cubic yards of debris have been collected. Discussions revolved around the next phase: addressing debris remaining in waterways, with options under consideration including utilizing the Army Corps of Engineers or a private contractor. The Board also discussed a crucial FEMA Hazard Mitigation Block Grant program, designed to assist homeowners in flood-prone areas by potentially funding home elevation or property acquisition for green space. County staff will be preparing to receive applications, a process that residents should watch for in the coming months. County Manager McNealy emphasized the importance of completing debris collection within 180 days to maximize federal funding, highlighting the complexity of managing such a large-scale disaster response.
Beyond hurricane recovery, the Board formally recognized and congratulated the Finance Department for achieving a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting – a prestigious national-level recognition earned for the third consecutive year. A heartwarming ceremony also honored retiring K-9 officer Macho and his handler, Lieutenant Tim Branch, acknowledging Macho’s eight and a half years of dedicated service and 230 utilizations in building searches and drug seizures. Sheriff Heintzman praised Macho’s ability to interact with the public, highlighting his role in ensuring community safety. Several appointments and reappointments were made to key advisory boards, including the Library Board, Public Health Advisory Board, and Tourism Development Authority. These appointments ensure continuity of service across these vital community bodies.
The meeting included a brief period for public comments, with Jim Frady from River Glen/Glen Alpine thanking the Board for their assistance following Hurricane Helene and expressing interest in collaborating on growth initiatives, particularly regarding Simpson Field.
Looking ahead, the Board has several action items to address. Discussions will continue regarding waterway debris collection and ensuring comprehensive debris removal in gated communities. Residents are encouraged to provide data on storm damage for accurate property tax valuations, and citizens interested in serving on various county boards and committees are encouraged to apply for open positions. The next Board meeting is scheduled for January 7th (pre-agenda at 3 p.m.) and January 21st (regular meeting). Residents can mark their calendars for the Christmas Parade on December 17th and note that county offices will be closed December 24-26 and January 1st. Finally, the Martin Luther King Jr. Banquet will be held on January 18th at the Moreton Community House.
This meeting demonstrated a commitment to addressing immediate needs following Hurricane Helene while also recognizing the dedication of county staff and ensuring effective governance through board appointments. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about these ongoing efforts and consider participating in future meetings or applying for positions on county boards.
