Burke County Board of Commissioners Organizational Meeting Recap – December 2, 2024

On December 2nd, 2024, the Burke County Board of Commissioners held their Organizational Meeting, formally marking the beginning of a new term for the governing body. This meeting focused primarily on establishing leadership and key appointments, laying the groundwork for the board's operations in 2025. The meeting began with a traditional invocation by Pastor George Logan, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem. A significant portion was dedicated to the official swearing-in ceremony for newly elected or re-elected commissioners Jeffrey Coy Britton, Brian Keith Barrier, and Michael Hugh Stroud, administered by Judge Dan Kenner.

A key outcome of the meeting was the election of board leadership for 2025. Jeffrey Coy Britton was unanimously elected Chairman, and Michelle Smith was also unanimously chosen as Vice-Chairman. This signifies a clear direction for the board’s leadership under Britton's guidance, with Smith supporting in her role as Vice-Chairman. The board also approved bonds for several key county officials, including the Finance Director, Tax Collector, Register of Deeds, and Sheriff. These bonds are essential for these officials to effectively carry out their responsibilities within the county government. Furthermore, Deston Hall from Warren Hall was appointed as the County Attorney, and the Kanye Law Firm was retained to handle tax-related legal matters. These appointments ensure that the county has experienced and capable legal counsel for both general legal affairs and specialized tax issues.

While this Organizational Meeting was largely procedural, it's important to note that there were no formal public comments or community input sessions held. The focus remained on internal organizational matters and appointments, which are necessary steps to ensure the smooth operation of county government. Commissioners Barrier, Stroud, and Britton each shared brief remarks following their oath-taking, expressing gratitude to their families and constituents, and outlining commitments to accessibility, transparency, and progress for Burke County. Newly appointed County Attorney Deston Hall also expressed his enthusiasm to work alongside the board, highlighting his firm’s experience in local government law.

Looking ahead, the Board of Commissioners will reconvene at 3:00 PM for a pre-agenda meeting, marking the start of their regular business. Citizens are encouraged to reach out and connect with the newly elected/re-elected commissioners, fostering communication between residents and their local government. The decisions made during this Organizational Meeting establish a solid foundation for the Board of Commissioners as they embark on their new term, ensuring that Burke County has established leadership and legal representation to address the challenges and opportunities ahead.
