Water Department Provides Winter Preparedness Guidance at County Briefing

On November 27, 2024, the County Briefing featured an update from the Water Department focusing primarily on winter weather preparedness and addressing concerns surrounding lead testing. The meeting, attended by County officials and Water Department representatives, did not involve any formal votes or decisions but served as an informational session for residents. The presentation aimed to equip homeowners with the knowledge and steps necessary to safeguard their homes and water supply during the approaching colder months.

A significant portion of the meeting centered on preventing frozen pipes, a common concern as temperatures drop. Residents were provided with detailed instructions on preventative measures, including disconnecting hoses, insulating exposed pipes, opening cabinet doors under sinks to allow warmer air circulation, and identifying the location of main water valves and water heater shut-off valves. Attendees were also advised to maintain a consistent thermostat temperature and, during periods of extreme cold, allow faucets to drip slightly. Should pipes freeze, the Water Department emphasized safe thawing techniques using a hair dryer and strongly cautioned against dangerous methods like employing torches or open flames, citing the risk of explosions and serious injury.

Beyond winter preparedness, the Water Department addressed ongoing concerns regarding lead testing kits. The County is currently experiencing a surge in requests for these kits, with over 5,000 already received and an average of 50-100 new requests daily. While turnaround time for results currently sits at four to six weeks, the department is actively working to expedite this process and anticipates sharing updates on progress next week. To assist with distribution, the City of Asheville Water Resources will be present at an upcoming resource fair to provide kits directly to interested residents.

Finally, the Water Department reiterated that responsibility for pipes and plumbing located on the homeowner's side of the water meter rests with the resident. Should residents suspect their water meter is frozen, they are advised to contact Water Resources directly at 828-251-1122. The department will dispatch a meter technician to assess the situation and provide assistance. Residents can expect further information regarding lead testing turnaround times next week, and are encouraged to review the preventative measures outlined during the briefing to ensure their homes are prepared for the winter season.
