Tree Board Meeting Recap – May 28, 2024

The Tree Board convened on May 28, 2024, to discuss a range of topics related to the town's trees and green spaces. While the meeting provided valuable insights into ongoing concerns and potential improvements, it’s important to note that due to a lack of sufficient board members present (a quorum), no formal decisions or votes could be taken during this session. The discussion served as a crucial preliminary step towards addressing key issues and planning for future action with all board members present.

A significant portion of the meeting focused on identifying areas needing attention and outlining plans for future discussions. Concerns regarding tree management within town rights-of-way were repeatedly raised, highlighting the need for a dedicated review at a future meeting with a full board. Board members also discussed the town's current "Tree Management Guide" and tree ordinance, recognizing a need to update these documents to address safety concerns – specifically the presence of flammable plants like rhododendron and laurel – and potentially improve overall tree management practices. A key point raised was the need for a comprehensive town planting plan to guide future tree plantings and replacements, ensuring a diverse and healthy ecosystem.

Community input was provided by Mary Standard, who praised the recent "Treasure Tree Walk" potentially organized by a group called the Swananoa Tree Alliance. She emphasized its success and suggested exploring stronger collaboration between the Tree Board and this group to further enhance community engagement with local trees. Tyler Smith, a board member, shared positive observations about the improved tree health in Montreat, attributing this progress to previous inventory and management efforts by town staff.

Following the discussions, several action items were identified for future consideration. The Chair will distribute copies of the Tree Management Guide and tree ordinance to all board members for review prior to a future meeting. The Board will also explore opportunities to collaborate with the Swananoa Tree Alliance, and connect with the town manager to discuss implementation strategies for GIS mapping software – a tool that could be used to inventory trees, identify significant plants, and potentially create pocket parks. Finally, the Board agreed to continue discussing right-of-way tree management and develop a town planting plan at subsequent meetings.

This meeting underscored the Tree Board's commitment to ensuring a healthy and vibrant urban forest for our community. While formal decisions were not possible this time, the discussions provided a clear roadmap for future action and highlighted areas where resident involvement can contribute to positive change. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about future Tree Board meetings and opportunities for participation as the board works towards these goals.
