Event Recap

Weaverville Town Council Charts Course for the Future at Strategic Planning Retreat

On February 24, 2024, the Weaverville Town Council convened a Strategic Planning Retreat to outline the town’s direction for the next five years. This retreat, attended by all council members and several residents including participants from the Citizens Academy, served as a crucial first step in developing a comprehensive strategic plan that will guide Weaverville's growth and development. While no formal votes were taken during the retreat itself, significant discussions laid the groundwork for future decisions impacting all residents.

The day began with a review of the town's previous strategic plan (2018-2021), assessing progress and identifying areas needing attention. Following this, the council engaged in a thorough SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis to understand Weaverville’s current position. This exercise informed the identification of key focus areas, which emerged as central themes for future planning efforts: Recreation (parks, greenways, and nature preservation), Relationships (strengthening ties with the county, schools, and regional organizations), Development (addressing housing needs, healthcare facilities, and staffing challenges), Infrastructure (water resources, broadband access, and traffic management), Business (supporting local businesses and downtown revitalization), and Communication (improving outreach to all residents). A significant portion of the discussion also centered on Weaverville’s demographic trends, particularly an aging population, and strategies to attract younger families and professionals.

Throughout the discussions, council members emphasized the importance of citizen engagement, recognizing the Citizens Academy as a valuable resource for cultivating future community leaders. Several residents in attendance shared their perspectives, adding valuable insights to the conversation. The discussion surrounding events and alcohol highlighted a need to balance community enjoyment with public safety, prompting consideration of responsible practices for social districts and other events.

Looking ahead, several key action items have been identified. Town staff, led by Selena and James, will now compile the retreat’s discussion points, prioritize these focus areas, and draft a formal strategic plan document. This draft will then be presented back to the Town Council for review and feedback before being released publicly for final consideration. The council also agreed to schedule workshops dedicated to further exploring specific topics, including the optimal hours of operation and potential impact of Social Districts, as well as improving communication and collaboration with local schools. Finally, staff will investigate potential grant opportunities related to stormwater management and other initiatives.

The Weaverville Town Council’s Strategic Planning Retreat represents a significant commitment to proactive planning and community engagement. By prioritizing these key focus areas and establishing clear next steps, the council aims to build a vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive future for Weaverville. Residents can expect further opportunities to provide input as the strategic plan develops, ensuring that it reflects the community’s vision for years to come.
