Fletcher Town Council Meeting Recap – July 14, 2025
The Fletcher Town Council convened on July 14, 2025, for a regular meeting focused on reviewing key operational updates, addressing community concerns, and making decisions regarding town projects. The meeting included a presentation from the Asheville Regional Airport, discussions on future concert locations, and appointments to town boards.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to a comprehensive presentation from Lou Blue Wise, detailing the Asheville Regional Airport's 2024 performance. The airport saw a slight decrease in passenger traffic (3.2%) due to hurricane impacts, but overall demonstrated strong performance with 27 non-stop destinations and a growing market. Notably, the airport contributes $3.85 billion to Western North Carolina's economy annually and concluded 2024 with a substantial net surplus of $14 million for capital projects, alongside increased assets totaling over $314 million. Council members inquired about the progress of the conference center hotel project and stream restoration efforts, receiving updates on both initiatives.
Beyond airport matters, the council engaged in a lively discussion regarding the location of future summer concerts. Josh Doors, representing the concert series organizers, advocated for returning to the town park to accommodate community requests. After consideration of various factors, the council decided on a rotating system for concert locations, with the August 16th concert planned for the auction house and future events potentially alternating between the park and other venues. This decision reflects a commitment to providing accessible public spaces while considering community preferences. Douglas Ferguson was also appointed to fill the vacancy on the Planning Board for District Four.
The Town Manager’s report provided updates on several ongoing projects impacting residents. Repairs to ball fields, multi-use courts, and the dog park – damaged during Hurricane Helene – are nearing completion. Work on restoring the greenway trail, including bridge and stream bank repairs, is slated to begin July 21st. Addressing stormwater concerns near 96 Wilkie Way remains a priority, with McGill Associates currently developing solutions. Finally, Summit Marketing is finalizing promotional materials for the town center project, which will be shared with Lewis Real Estate Group. The Fire District’s recent ISO rating of 3 was also highlighted, indicating a positive impact on homeowners' insurance rates.
Looking Ahead: Several key action items emerged from the meeting. Town staff will continue their work on park and greenway repairs, while McGill Associates focuses on the stormwater review. Summit Marketing will finalize the town center brochure. Council members expressed interest in exploring a new amphitheater or platform within the park, potentially for use during summer camps and other community events. The council will also continue to evaluate options for future concert locations, ensuring a balance between utilizing the town park and exploring alternative venues. Residents are encouraged to share their input on concert locations as discussions continue.
