Fletcher Town Council Meeting Recap - November 12, 2024: Focus on Storm Recovery and Community Initiatives

The Fletcher Town Council convened on November 12, 2024, for an agenda review meeting focused primarily on the ongoing recovery efforts following Tropical Storm Helene and several key community initiatives. The meeting included updates from town staff, discussions on various projects, and recognition for a departing council member.

A significant portion of the meeting centered around the aftermath of Tropical Storm Helene. Council members acknowledged that debris removal is progressing well, thanks to collaborative efforts with the county and Southern Disaster Response. Residents are encouraged to utilize the online form (available on both town and county websites) to report any remaining debris for pickup. A crucial reminder was issued regarding the January 7, 2025, deadline to apply for FEMA individual assistance. The town is diligently compiling a detailed list of expenses incurred during the storm response, anticipating potential costs exceeding $1 million and aiming to recover approximately 75% through FEMA funding. Discussions also touched on the Army Corps of Engineers' role in stream work, advising residents needing assessments to consider hiring a civil engineer.

Beyond storm recovery, the council approved several important items. A unanimous vote authorized a $300 bonus for each current town employee in recognition of their dedication and hard work during the storm response. While a budget amendment may be required to cover this expense, it represents a tangible thank you for their efforts. The timeline for filling the District 1 council vacancy was also approved by consensus, opening applications from November 13th to November 27th. The council also approved the consent agenda, a standard procedural step.

The meeting included updates on several ongoing initiatives. The town is collaborating with Retail Strategies to explore development opportunities and connect with potential developers, aiming to boost economic growth. Residents can mark their calendars for November 22nd (Friday) from 10 AM to 2 PM at First Citizens Bank, when the town will host a community shred day and medication drop-off event. Exciting news was shared regarding the Greenway extension, with the town receiving grant approval for its expansion and exploring further funding opportunities. Finally, the council is working with the Army Corps of Engineers to update wetlands delineations for the town center property.

During the meeting, Mayor Pro Tem Sheila Franklin received heartfelt recognition and thanks for her 15 years of dedicated service to the town. Town officials also attended a public convening in Morganton, advocating for increased funding and flexibility to support businesses impacted by the storm.

Looking Ahead: The town will continue its debris removal efforts, diligently compiling and submitting FEMA applications. Bidding for park fencing replacement and sediment removal will commence soon. McGill Associates is continuing its preliminary engineering analysis of the town center property. Residents are encouraged to participate in the upcoming community shred day and stay informed about opportunities related to the Greenway extension. This meeting demonstrated a commitment to both immediate storm recovery and long-term community development, ensuring Fletcher remains a vibrant and resilient place to live.
