Recap of August 12, 2024 Regular Meeting
On August 12, 2024, the governing body convened for its regular meeting. The session began with standard formalities—a moment of silence and the Pledge of Allegiance—and proceeded through a series of important discussions and decisions impacting the community. No public comment was offered during the designated time slot, indicating a relatively quiet start to citizen engagement for this meeting.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to receiving and discussing the Asheville Regional Airport's Annual Report for 2023. Presented by Mr. Lou Bluewise, the report highlighted a year of substantial growth and investment. The airport experienced record passenger numbers (2,246,000 – a 22% increase), added new non-stop routes to key destinations like Phoenix, Denver, and Orlando, and saw a 16.4% increase in airline operations. Notably, the airport’s economic impact on Western North Carolina was reported at $2.275 billion. Looking ahead, the airport is currently undergoing a major terminal renovation to increase capacity and accommodate up to 4 million passengers, with parking solutions also being prioritized. Councilman Lance inquired about the airport’s standing within North Carolina, and was informed that it is currently ranked as the third largest, surpassing Greensboro.
The council also addressed amendments to the Land Development Code concerning family subdivisions and street access (Articles 12 & 18). These proposed changes aim to clarify regulations regarding the width of access easements on larger tracts of land, ultimately recommending a 20-foot minimum right-of-way. Following a public hearing where no members of the public offered testimony, the council unanimously approved these amendments. This adjustment will impact future development projects involving family subdivisions and ensure clearer guidelines for property access.
Finally, the council made important appointments to local boards. Eric Weber was reappointed to the Parks and Recreation Board, recognizing his continued service to the community. Laurie Bowman was also appointed to this board, bringing fresh perspectives and expertise to the organization.
What Happens Next?
The approved amendments to the Land Development Code will now be incorporated into official regulations, impacting future development projects. The ongoing terminal renovation at Asheville Regional Airport will continue to unfold, with residents encouraged to stay informed about progress and potential impacts. The Parks and Recreation Board, bolstered by the reappointment of Eric Weber and the addition of Laurie Bowman, will continue its work to enhance recreational opportunities for all residents.
This meeting demonstrated a focus on strategic growth, regulatory clarity, and community engagement through board appointments. Residents are encouraged to review the full meeting transcript [link to transcript if applicable] for a complete record of discussions and decisions.
