Special Call Meeting Recap: Fiscal Year Closeout & Infrastructure Investments (June 27, 2024)
On June 27, 2024, the Special Call meeting was held to finalize the town’s financial activities for the recently concluded fiscal year. This meeting focused primarily on designating funds for park development and crucial improvements to our sidewalks and greenways, setting the stage for future infrastructure projects. The meeting was attended by all council members, and decisions were made unanimously throughout the proceedings.
A key outcome of the meeting was the approval to assign a total of $30,264 to the Future Park Development Fund. This fund received a significant boost this year thanks to the resounding success of the annual golf tournament, which generated a record-breaking net profit of $4,773 – the best in over a decade. Additionally, a generous donation of $200 was received, further bolstering the fund's resources.
The bulk of the discussion centered on a substantial influx of funds for sidewalk and greenway improvements. This year, Sheets Development made a payment of $165,495 to the town in lieu of constructing sidewalks as part of their development project at Asheville Highway and Naples Road. McGill, a consulting firm, verified that this amount accurately reflects the cost of building those sidewalks. Following review, the council unanimously approved a motion to commit $185,305 to the Sidewalks/Greenways fund.
During the meeting, council members engaged in a robust discussion about how these funds can best be utilized to benefit residents. Ideas floated included connecting sidewalks to future developments, such as those planned near Asheville Highway and the BSC Holdings project. Several council members expressed interest in exploring options beyond just new sidewalk construction, suggesting that resurfacing projects and hard surface improvements could also be considered. A recurring theme was the importance of ensuring that future developments actively contribute to expanding and improving our town's sidewalk network, particularly as the community continues to grow.
Looking ahead, several action items were identified. Eric will ensure McGill completes its review of Sheets Development's fee in lieu payment to confirm accuracy. Furthermore, the council indicated a desire to schedule a future discussion dedicated to strategically planning how these funds can be used for upcoming sidewalk and greenway projects. Finally, council members will explore the possibility of utilizing these funds for resurfacing projects as well, adding flexibility to how the money can be spent.
This meeting marks a significant step forward in investing in our town's infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for all residents. By strategically allocating these funds, we are laying the groundwork for a more connected and pedestrian-friendly community.
