Community Meeting Recap: Helene Recovery – September 30, 2024

On September 30, 2024, the Town of Black Mountain held a community meeting to update residents on recovery efforts following the severe storm, Helene. The meeting, attended by key town officials including Lisa Jennings (Public Information Officer), Police Chief Steve Parker, Fire Chief John Coffey, Town Manager Josh Harold, and Public Works Director Jamie Matthews, focused on providing clear information and fostering community cooperation during a challenging time. While no formal votes were taken, the meeting provided crucial updates and outlined immediate next steps for residents impacted by the storm.

The primary focus of the meeting was a comprehensive overview of the current situation and ongoing recovery efforts. Discussions centered on life safety, rescue operations (now transitioning to repair), utility restoration, road conditions, and available community support. Residents received detailed information from the Fire Department regarding proactive preparations before the storm and their ongoing efforts to reach damaged areas, including a remarkable display of dedication by firefighters hiking supplies up Number Nine. Updates from Duke Progress Energy indicated that power restoration is expected to take "weeks," while the city’s water system, reliant on Asheville, faces significant challenges due to breaks in the North Fork Reservoir line. Public Works highlighted extensive damage to roads, particularly along Number Nine, which is currently impassable in some areas.

Recognizing the immediate needs of residents, officials announced several vital resources. A distribution center has been established at Ingles, open daily from 9 AM to 7 PM, providing drinking water, food, and essential supplies. Additionally, Emerge Ministries has set up operations at Cragmont Assembly, providing a significant boost with 30,000 gallons of water and 5,000 meals daily. A question-and-answer session addressed concerns about mail service, gas availability (currently limited), evacuation routes, and access to public restrooms and charging stations. Throughout the meeting, officials repeatedly emphasized the importance of remaining calm, following instructions, and supporting one another. As Police Chief Parker stated, "Don't panic. Everything's gonna be alright. The resources are coming."

Following the meeting, several key action items were identified to support ongoing recovery. The Town will establish a community information center at the Chamber of Commerce, serving as a central hub for gathering questions, coordinating volunteers, and disseminating updates. The distribution center at Ingles will continue to operate, providing essential supplies. A plan for garbage disposal utilizing strategically placed dumpsters is being implemented. Town officials are working closely with Duke Progress Energy and Asheville to restore power and water services, while Public Works is prioritizing road repairs, especially in severely damaged areas like Number Nine. Daily meetings will continue at 3:00 PM to provide ongoing updates and address community concerns, and residents are strongly encouraged to volunteer their time and support recovery efforts.

This meeting underscored the significant impact of Helene on Black Mountain and surrounding areas, highlighting the extensive damage to infrastructure and essential services. The collaborative spirit demonstrated by town officials and the commitment to providing resources like the distribution center at Ingles, offer a crucial lifeline for residents during this challenging time. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through the Town of Black Mountain’s Facebook page and to utilize available resources while remaining patient as recovery efforts continue. The Town Manager, Josh Harold, summed up the collective sentiment: "We're going to get through this together if we stick together as a community."
