Woodfin Town Council Budget Worksession Recap - May 19, 2026

The Woodfin Town Council convened on May 19, 2026, for a budget worksession alongside discussions of community recognition and ongoing town projects. This meeting provided residents with valuable insights into the council's priorities and upcoming initiatives, all aimed at enhancing Woodfin’s quality of life. The session was primarily focused on budget considerations, with several key decisions and updates impacting the community.

A significant portion of the meeting centered on approving a 12-month moratorium on data centers within Woodfin town limits. Recognizing the rapid evolution of this technology, the council voted unanimously to implement this pause. This action allows the town time to thoroughly research and develop appropriate regulations, aligning with their ongoing update to the land development ordinance (LDO). Council members emphasized the importance of proactive planning and ensuring regulations keep pace with technological advancements. Alongside this, the council also approved a text amendment allowing Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) as a limited use within the Community Shopping District, specifically for business owners, employees, or their family members directly connected to a business.

Beyond the new regulations, the council acknowledged and celebrated several achievements within Woodfin. Officer Laura Godwin was formally recognized for completing her intermediate certification from North Carolina Treatment Standards, a testament to the Woodland Police Department's commitment to professional development. Marie Bittix, Special Projects Manager, was also congratulated on earning her bachelor’s degree – a significant personal accomplishment.

The council received updates on several ongoing projects, including recovery efforts from Tropical Storm Helene, which are nearing completion with most debris reimbursements received. Funding has been secured for critical road infrastructure improvements and the restoration of Silver Line Park, a project many residents will be pleased to see progressing. Construction on Taylor’s Wave at Silver Line Park is underway, with the wave structure now operational; however, officials are advising against visits due to ongoing safety precautions. Discussions also touched on park maintenance and improvements, including playground sand replacement and restroom cleaning, as well as challenges encountered in replacing the canopy at Roy Pope Park due to liability concerns.

Looking ahead, residents should mark their calendars for the upcoming Public Hearing on the recommended budget for the next fiscal year, scheduled for June 16th at 5:00 PM. A dedicated work session specifically focused on the new Town Hall project is planned for August 31st at 4:00 PM. Finally, a draft newsletter is being finalized for release in early June, providing residents with further updates and information.
