Tree Board Meeting Recap: July 14, 2026 – Focusing on Montreat's Trees and Future Growth

The Town of Montreat’s Tree Board convened its monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 14th, 2026, dedicating approximately 40 minutes to a range of topics impacting Montreat’s trees and green spaces. The meeting, attended by board members and Town Council Commissioner Blake, focused on ongoing projects, future initiatives, and improving communication with residents.

A significant decision was made to move forward with an agreement negotiated with the American Chestnut Foundation to plant chestnut trees within Montreat. This initiative, previously stalled due to concerns from a neighboring property owner who has since withdrawn their objection, promises to introduce a historically significant and ecologically valuable species back into the region. The board also approved designating $817 from a separate fund specifically for ongoing hemlock treatments, ensuring continued efforts to protect these vital trees. Finally, the board approved a new logo for the Tree Board itself, signaling a fresh look and renewed focus.

Discussion centered on several key areas. The ongoing Stone Bridges project, addressing flood damage along Flat Creek following recent storms, was reviewed, with North Carolina Emergency Management expected to begin work before November. The board also discussed the Flat Creek Crossing project, anticipating decisions from Town Council in June regarding grading work. A need was identified to update the Tree Management Guide, town ordinances concerning trees, and the board’s rules of procedure. Elizabeth and Ann were tasked with drafting revisions to these documents, a crucial step in ensuring the town's tree management practices are current and effective. The board further explored options for informing residents about flood zone regulations and assistance available when dealing with fallen trees, recognizing a need to improve communication regarding tree-related concerns on private property.

While there were no formal public comments during the meeting, discussions highlighted resident anxieties about fallen trees and confusion regarding who to contact for assistance. Finally, Tyler and George have been identified for re-appointment to their Tree Board positions in January 2027, and board members are encouraged to submit article ideas for the Montreat Minute.
