The Burke County Board of Health convened for its scheduled meeting on July 27, 2026, with all present commissioners in attendance. Notably, Vice Chair Smith was absent due to medical recovery. Following this review, the Board voted 4-0 to accept the report as presented. Additionally, a batch of over 100 health department policies was reviewed, with 67 revised, 12 new, and 32 requiring no changes. The Board voted 4-0 to approve these policies as presented, ensuring the department’s operational guidelines are current and compliant.

A key strategic discussion involved a proposal by Dr. Cherry to change the Board’s meeting frequency from once annually to semi-annually. The Board voted 4-0 to approve this change, aiming to improve oversight and strategic alignment with county priorities. Commissioner Berry supported the structural change, noting that pre-agenda meetings had become lengthy and might benefit from being held on a separate date. Commissioner Burns suggested that the upcoming second meeting should include strategic talking points, such as updates on septic tank permits, to ensure public awareness. The Chair directed staff to determine specific dates for the second semi-annual meeting, which will be added to the Board’s annual schedule.

Regarding community input, the Chair opened the floor for informal public comments, but no comments were received from residents. On administrative matters, staff discussed the status of the Burke County Public Health Advisory Committee, specifically the need to fill a vacant veterinarian seat. Ashley Garrett confirmed that staff will first attempt to fill this role with a newly hired Animal Services veterinarian within Burke County. If this effort is unsuccessful, staff are authorized to seek candidates from contiguous counties, as permitted by state law. The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn, passed 4-0.
