The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners will convene on October 20, 2026, with a meeting agenda focused on economic development, public safety, and community support. The meeting will include opportunities for public comment and feature presentations related to National Disability Employment Awareness Month and Domestic Violence Prevention. A significant portion of the meeting will be dedicated to a public hearing concerning the Appalachian Mountain Health Economic Development Agreement and Building Reuse Grant, which proposes a $480,000 grant to support the renovation of a medical facility in Black Mountain, creating 48 new jobs.
Several key decisions are expected from the Board. Commissioners will consider a vote to accept two Small Business Recovery Grants totaling $1,565,370 for sidewalk improvements in Swannanoa and along Whitson Avenue. They will also vote on resolutions allowing retired deputies to purchase their service weapons for $1 each and approving a budget amendment accepting a $13,845 JAG grant to upgrade photography equipment for the Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Unit. Finally, appointments are on the agenda to fill positions on the Health and Human Services Board.
Notably, the Board will also consider a letter of support for the Fairview Holiday Parade and review an economic development agreement with Appalachian Mountain Health, which includes provisions for dispute resolution through mediation in Asheville and confidentiality of trade secrets. Citizens interested in these topics, as well as the ongoing discussion regarding constitutional amendments and other community concerns raised during public comment, are encouraged to attend or view the meeting.
