Buncombe County Schools Board of Education Special Called Meeting Recap – September 24, 2026
The Buncombe County Schools Board of Education convened a special called meeting on September 24, 2026, to elect the next superintendent and formally welcome the newly appointed leader. The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence.
A significant portion of the meeting focused on the superintendent search process, which followed Dr. Rob Jackson’s retirement announcement in June 2026. The Board reviewed surveys from employees, parents, students, and community members before assessing applicant profiles and conducting interviews. The Board then voted to elect Dr. Jennifer Scruggs-Reed as superintendent, with her contract extending through June 30, 2030. Following the election, Dr. Reed was formally sworn in by Judge Robin Merrill.
During introductory remarks, Dr. Reed stated her commitment to ensuring "every single student will succeed" by leading with “courage, clarity, and compassion,” emphasizing that the school system is "home" to her. Board Chair Rob Elliot thanked Dr. Jackson for his four years of service and announced that “punch and cookies” would be available in Maple for fellowship and celebration, with a suggestion to take pictures in front of the podium. Several board members offered supportive statements; Judy Lewis stated that schools are “in good hands,” Ann Franklin referenced the first female superintendent, Ethel Terrell, Reverend Martin emphasized supporting students through the strategic plan, and Ms. Clemmons expressed looking forward to matching Dr. Reed’s passion for Buncombe County Schools. A speaker noted the significance of a phrase Dr. Reed uses, connecting it to Ethel Terrell.
The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn, which passed without opposition. There were no formal public comments taken during either portion of the meeting.
