Beyond direct care efforts, the committee made significant strides in planning for a crucial new resource: a 16-bed facility-based crisis stabilization center, slated to open in 2028. Following a thorough selection process, Holland & Hamrick was chosen as the architectural and engineering firm for the project. A key recommendation to the Board of Commissioners will be presented on September 21st: selecting Phoenix Counseling Center as the provider to collaborate with Holland & Hamrick on design, ensuring the building effectively meets state requirements and facilitates an efficient intake process. This facility represents a substantial investment in expanding mental health and substance use treatment services within Burke County.

The meeting also highlighted community-led initiatives, including the successful "Relay for Remembrance Recovery Walk" held on August 29th. This event, coinciding with International Overdose Awareness Day, fostered hope and connection through activities like breathing exercises and a photo wall honoring those lost to the opioid crisis. Furthermore, the community health vending machine continues to see increased usage, with Narcan being the most frequently dispensed item. Plans are underway to potentially add a second vending machine through a Dogwood grant, further expanding access to life-saving resources.

Looking ahead, the committee discussed streamlining the grant-making process by utilizing letters of interest to identify priority areas. This approach will help focus funding on crucial needs such as recovery housing, family/caregiver support, faith community engagement, and prevention of youth substance use. A root cause analysis is underway to ensure funding decisions align with the overall strategic plan goals, addressing the underlying factors contributing to the opioid crisis. Finally, a presentation from Spark highlighted their progress during the first year of their program.
