Asheville Recovery Efforts Update: A Recap of the August 6th County Briefing

On August 6, 2025, Asheville held a County Briefing to provide an update on the city's ongoing recovery from Tropical Storm Helene, which struck 317 days prior. The meeting, led by City Manager Deborah Campbell, focused on progress made and outlined upcoming initiatives aimed at rebuilding and strengthening the community. While no formal votes were taken during this particular briefing, key decisions are expected in August and September regarding major park restoration projects.

A significant portion of the meeting centered around preliminary findings from a visit by the Urban Land Institute (ULI) panel, a group of national experts brought in to assess recovery progress and offer long-term planning recommendations. The panel emphasized the importance of economic diversification, thoughtful floodplain land use planning, and addressing the critical need for affordable housing – themes that resonated strongly with community input gathered during their meetings. A final ULI report will be released later this fall and can be found at www.ashvillerecovers.org. City staff will be reviewing this report and discussing strategies with legal counsel following its release.

Beyond the ULI findings, updates were provided on several key recovery initiatives. The Temporary Activation Program (TAP) is streamlining approvals for projects designed to aid public space recovery, with twelve projects already approved, including stream bank restoration and cleanup efforts. Residents interested in participating can find more information at www.ashvillerecovers.org/TAP or by emailing [email protected]. Significant progress continues on storm debris removal, with over 884,755 cubic yards collected to date. The Municipal Golf Course is undergoing restoration designed by biohabit habitat of North Carolina, with the back nine holes open for regular play and the front nine temporarily transformed into a disc golf course. A new Artist Vendor Pilot Program, launching at 68 Haywood Street, will provide vending opportunities for local artists during events.

The meeting also highlighted the resumption of Greyhound bus service in downtown Asheville, restoring vital transportation links to surrounding communities. Finally, a public Q&A session regarding findings from the Regional Housing Needs Assessment is scheduled for August 26th at Blue Ridge Community College, providing residents an opportunity to learn more and share their perspectives.

City Manager Campbell underscored the city's commitment to "building back better" and expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of partners, staff, and residents. The ongoing recovery process demonstrates a concerted effort to not only restore Asheville but also to build a more resilient and equitable community for the future. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about recovery efforts and opportunities through www.ashvillerecovers.org.
