Asheville Downtown Commission Meeting Recap: June 8, 2018
On June 8th, the Asheville Downtown Commission held a meeting focused on understanding the current state of downtown businesses and planning for future improvements. The meeting, attended by Commission members and community stakeholders, covered a range of topics from the recently completed Downtown Census to ongoing discussions about transportation and public space management. This recap provides a clear overview of the key takeaways for Asheville residents.
A major focus of the meeting was the presentation and initial discussion of findings from the Downtown Census, conducted in late 2017/early 2018. The survey of 214 businesses revealed valuable insights into the downtown business landscape. Key findings included that most businesses are relatively small, primarily retail and restaurants, and have been operating for less than 10 years. While a majority of businesses report in-person sales, employee parking and limited operating hours (most closing before 9:00 pm) were identified as challenges. Notably, a significant number of businesses expressed interest in staying open later but cited staffing and sales concerns as barriers. The census also highlighted a low usage of public transportation among businesses, suggesting an opportunity to promote its benefits. Residents voiced their desire for more parking decks and public restrooms during the meeting, a sentiment echoed in the census results.
The Commission took formal action by approving nominations for Robin Reigns and Taylor Williams to join the Downtown Commission, ensuring continued leadership in downtown development efforts. Beyond these nominations, a significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to discussing potential improvements for Cox and Lexington Avenues. The city is currently developing designs that prioritize pedestrian safety and accessibility, incorporating feedback received from the community. A crucial opportunity for residents to directly influence these plans will be at a public workshop scheduled for June 21st – an event strongly encouraged by attendees.
Community input played a vital role throughout the meeting. Several residents expressed concerns about the timeline for implementing a downtown shuttle, urging quicker action to address transportation needs. A resident also emphasized the importance of balancing visitor interests with those of downtown residents in all planning decisions, a crucial point for ensuring a vibrant and inclusive community. Discussions also centered on integrating art and culture more prominently into the Downtown Master Plan, reflecting a desire to enhance the downtown experience.
Looking ahead, several key action items were identified. The Commission will continue analyzing the Downtown Census data to inform future decisions and strategies. The city is actively working on a transit master plan, with ongoing updates to be shared with the Commission. Additionally, the Department of Venture is investigating loading zone issues in response to public feedback and exploring options for fare-free bus service, potentially including a weekend trial. Finally, the Commission is developing guiding principles for managing downtown public spaces that will prioritize safety, accessibility, and support local businesses.
This meeting underscored the city's commitment to fostering a vibrant and diverse downtown that serves as Asheville’s economic heart. Residents are encouraged to stay involved by attending the public workshop on June 21st and contacting the Downtown Commission or City staff with any questions or suggestions. Your voice is essential in shaping the future of downtown Asheville.
