Fletcher Town Council Recap: August 11, 2025
The Fletcher Town Council convened on August 11, 2025, for a regular meeting focused primarily on addressing ongoing community concerns and moving forward with key town projects. The meeting began with standard procedural items, including approval of the minutes from the previous session and a consent agenda that greenlit two grants supporting Greenway extensions. This demonstrated a commitment to expanding recreational opportunities within the town.
A significant portion of the meeting centered on persistent stormwater issues affecting residents along Wilkie Way. Following a presentation from McGill Associates outlining potential solutions, including a weir plate water detention system, the council ultimately decided against pursuing that option due to concerns about potential negative impacts downstream. After discussions with affected property owners, the council agreed to move forward with McGill Associates' alternative recommendations: improvements to a drainage ditch on one property and upgrading a culvert on another. While acknowledging that addressing these issues ultimately falls to the property owners, consistent with town policy, this decision reflects a pragmatic approach to resolving a challenging situation.
Beyond immediate concerns, the council received an update on efforts to secure state revolving funds for crucial sewer system improvements. These upgrades would connect properties on West Fell North Hudson Lane and Dalbert Terrace to the town's centralized sewer system. A recent survey was distributed to residents in this area to assess their septic systems, providing valuable data for the application process. The Town Manager will continue collaborating with Landisky to finalize and submit the full application to the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), a vital step towards modernizing the town's infrastructure.
The council also addressed the formation of a new Water & Sewer Commission, established through an agreement with Hendersonville and Henderson County. While no immediate appointment was made, the council directed town staff to coordinate with both entities to determine meeting schedules and details before recommending a candidate. Finally, the Town Manager provided updates on several ongoing projects, including the Courts Park repairs (nearing completion), debris cleanup efforts following recent storm events (currently facing some challenges with contractors and FEMA coordination), and the Town Center development, where finalized marketing materials are ready for distribution to prospective developers. A Community Appreciation Day and shred event, planned in conjunction with First Citizens Bank for October 24th, was also announced.
The council's discussions reflected a balance between addressing immediate resident concerns and strategically planning for the town’s future. While frustrations were voiced regarding the Wilkie Way stormwater situation, the council demonstrated a willingness to consider various options and ultimately prioritize solutions that minimize potential unintended consequences. Residents can anticipate further updates on the FEMA debris removal process and the sewer system improvement application in future council meetings.
