Special Call Meeting Recap: Bridge Repair Project – June 20, 2025
On June 20, 2025, a Special Call Meeting was convened to expedite the approval of a contractor for urgently needed repairs to a bridge within our local park system. This meeting was called due to unexpected delays in the regular bidding process, primarily stemming from difficulties accessing the bridge for construction. The meeting was attended by relevant city officials and representatives from McGill Associates, who coordinated the bidding process.
The primary focus of the meeting was selecting a contractor to repair the damaged bridge, which has been causing disruption for park users. Three bids were received, ranging from $354,000 to $852,000. Following a review of the bids and reference checks conducted by McGill Associates, Bradley and Connorgrady Contractors were identified as the lowest responsive and responsible bidder with a proposal of $354,000. The council unanimously approved this selection, demonstrating a commitment to swiftly addressing the bridge issue.
Beyond contractor selection, discussions centered on the optimal sequencing of repair work. While prioritizing the bridge repair itself was a key point, officials also considered stabilizing a steep stream bank section near Mills Gap Road to ensure public safety. A potential need was identified to secure permission from a neighboring property owner to utilize an alternative route during construction, adding another layer of logistical consideration. The meeting also acknowledged the current high demand for contractors in the area due to recent storm damage, which is impacting pricing and project timelines. As one official noted, "We just have so much abundance of work in our area now because of the storm. These contractors are pricing these things accordingly."
There were no direct public comments during this Special Call Meeting. However, officials acknowledged a significant level of community concern regarding the bridge repair timeline, as reflected in recent press inquiries. The council emphasized their desire to expedite the repairs and minimize disruption, with one official stating, "We will want them…try and work on the bridge, if that's at all possible first.”
Looking ahead, several key action items have been identified. The city will now work to finalize a formal contract with Bradley and Connorgrady Contractors, including necessary bond requirements. A pre-construction meeting will be scheduled to discuss the project timeline in detail, including the sequencing of work and access logistics. Crucially, efforts will be made to secure permission from the neighboring property owner for an alternative route and to explore options with the contractor to expedite the bridge repair process.
This Special Call Meeting represents a significant step towards restoring access and safety within our park system. The swift approval of a contractor underscores the city's commitment to addressing critical infrastructure needs and responding to community concerns. Residents can expect further updates as the project progresses, with a focus on minimizing disruption and ensuring timely completion.
