Agenda Review Meeting Recap: June 2, 2025 – Addressing Infrastructure Needs and Community Concerns

The Agenda Review Meeting held on June 2, 2025, focused on a range of critical issues impacting our community, from improving infrastructure to addressing resident concerns. The meeting was attended by council members and town staff, with significant discussion centered around potential funding opportunities, ongoing projects, and resident feedback. This recap provides a clear overview of the key decisions made, topics discussed, and next steps for residents to stay informed.

A major focus of the meeting was exploring opportunities to expand sewer services to underserved areas, particularly those affected by septic system failures following Hurricane Helene. The council unanimously approved moving forward with a preliminary application for Decentralized Water/Wastewater Revolving Loan Funds, which could provide grant funding to extend sewer lines to three streets. This initiative represents a significant step towards improving public health and addressing long-standing concerns within the community, with minimal financial impact due to the zero percent interest rate. The council did note that a 2% application fee would be required.

Beyond the sewer project, the council reviewed and made final adjustments to the draft budget ordinance and message, which will be presented for public approval next week. Updates were also provided on ongoing park repair projects, including fencing at the main park and bids for bridge and stream bank repairs. A special call meeting may be necessary to quickly approve the low bid for these park improvements, potentially impacting the budget closeout timeline. Discussions also centered on the recently completed street resurfacing project, where resident feedback highlighted concerns about the application process. The contractor will be addressing these issues and ensuring future projects adhere to best practices, including avoiding disruptions like mailbox relocation.

A recurring theme throughout the meeting was addressing resident concerns regarding stormwater issues, particularly on Wilkie Way. Residents Mr. Todd and Mr. Blanton presented photographic evidence of flooding, emphasizing the urgency of finding a solution. McGill Associates is currently evaluating options, including installing a wire plate similar to those used in neighboring areas, and will be providing recommendations. Finally, the council engaged in preliminary discussions regarding a potential development project with Lewis Real Estate Group, expressing a desire to avoid a gas station as an anchor tenant. Blythe Edwards, our new summer intern from Wofford College and Western Carolina University, was introduced and will be assisting with research on septic tank conditions and social media engagement.

What's Next? Several key action items emerged from the meeting, requiring ongoing attention: McGill Associates will continue evaluating solutions for Wilkie Way’s stormwater issues; town staff will gather information for Lewis Real Estate Group regarding the potential development property; Trace and Company, the resurfacing contractor, will address resident complaints and mailbox repairs. Residents are encouraged to attend next week’s public hearing for the budget ordinance approval, a crucial step in securing funding for these and other community priorities. We also anticipate a potential special call meeting to approve the low bid for bridge and stream bank repairs, so stay tuned for further updates.

This Agenda Review Meeting demonstrated a commitment to addressing critical infrastructure needs and responding to community concerns. By staying informed about these ongoing initiatives, residents can better understand the efforts underway to improve our quality of life.
